How we know where a plane is
Most airliners keep broadcasting their position, altitude and speed by radio. The system is called ADS-B. Thousands of antennas run by enthusiasts around the world pick up those signals, and we put them on the map.
Positions refresh every few seconds, and in between each plane glides smoothly along its heading and speed. Over oceans and deserts there are fewer antennas, so you may see fewer planes there than are really flying.
The route (origin and destination) comes from the flight number. It is the most likely route, so charter and unusual flights may differ from what is shown.

Is the flight map free?
Yes. You can watch live planes, routes and flight details for free, without creating an account.
How do I see which plane is flying over me?
Tap the location button on the map or type your city into the search box, then click a plane. You will see the flight number, route, altitude and aircraft type.
Why can't I see some planes?
Some aircraft do not transmit ADS-B, or fly where there are no antennas, for example over the ocean. We also hide aircraft whose owners asked for privacy, and planes on the ground.
How often do positions update?
We fetch data every few seconds, and between updates planes move smoothly along their heading and speed.
